How a ductless heat pump works
To heat, the outdoor unit absorbs heat energy from the outside air and transfers it to the indoor unit through the refrigerant. Compressing the refrigerant raises its temperature significantly by the time it reaches the indoor coil, and a quiet fan blows air across that coil into the room. In cooling mode the process runs in reverse, carrying heat out of the room to the outdoor unit.
Heat pumps run on electricity rather than burning fuel in the house. A central system also has a single point of filtration for the whole home, while ductless units circulate and filter the air in each room where they are installed.
Ductless systems are also a natural match for older homes heated by boilers. Instead of cutting chases for ductwork through plaster walls, a few compact indoor units add summer cooling and efficient spring and fall heat, while the boiler stays in place for the deepest cold of a Duluth winter.
Our process
We start with a visit to understand which rooms need help and why. We look at room sizes, windows, insulation and where the outdoor unit and line sets can run neatly, then recommend a single-zone, multi-zone or whole-home design and give you a free estimate. Installation is typically less disruptive than adding ductwork: a small opening through the wall for the refrigerant lines, the indoor head mounted high on the wall, and the outdoor unit set on a pad or bracket. We finish by showing you how to use the controls and clean the filters.
