Comfort in the rooms that need it most

Almost every Duluth house has a room that never feels right: an upstairs bedroom that bakes in July, a sunroom that is too cold to use in January, or an addition the old ductwork never reached. A ductless mini-split fixes that room without tearing into walls for new ducts. Carlson Duluth Company is a Mitsubishi Electric Diamond Contractor, and we design and install ductless heat pumps for single rooms, additions and whole homes.

Mitsubishi mini-split outdoor unit installed on a lake home in Cotton, MN

Mitsubishi Electric mini-split and multi-split systems are up to 40% more efficient than conventional systems. Because each indoor unit can be turned on or off on its own, you avoid heating or cooling rooms nobody is using, which saves energy and money.

Signs a mini-split is the right fit

  • One or more rooms stay too hot or too cold no matter how you set the thermostat
  • You are finishing a basement, adding a room or converting a garage or porch
  • Your home heats with a boiler or baseboard and has no ductwork for central air
  • You want to lean less on a fuel-burning system and add efficient electric heat
  • Window air conditioners are noisy, block the view and come out every fall

What is included

  • Single-room Mitsubishi Electric mini-split systems
  • Multi-split systems that serve several rooms from one outdoor unit
  • Whole-home ductless solutions
  • Hybrid heat setups that work alongside an existing furnace or boiler
  • Mounting, refrigerant lines, condensate drains and electrical connections
  • Seasonal cleaning and maintenance

How a ductless heat pump works

To heat, the outdoor unit absorbs heat energy from the outside air and transfers it to the indoor unit through the refrigerant. Compressing the refrigerant raises its temperature significantly by the time it reaches the indoor coil, and a quiet fan blows air across that coil into the room. In cooling mode the process runs in reverse, carrying heat out of the room to the outdoor unit.

Heat pumps run on electricity rather than burning fuel in the house. A central system also has a single point of filtration for the whole home, while ductless units circulate and filter the air in each room where they are installed.

Ductless systems are also a natural match for older homes heated by boilers. Instead of cutting chases for ductwork through plaster walls, a few compact indoor units add summer cooling and efficient spring and fall heat, while the boiler stays in place for the deepest cold of a Duluth winter.

Our process

We start with a visit to understand which rooms need help and why. We look at room sizes, windows, insulation and where the outdoor unit and line sets can run neatly, then recommend a single-zone, multi-zone or whole-home design and give you a free estimate. Installation is typically less disruptive than adding ductwork: a small opening through the wall for the refrigerant lines, the indoor head mounted high on the wall, and the outdoor unit set on a pad or bracket. We finish by showing you how to use the controls and clean the filters.

FAQ

Ductless Mini-Split Systems FAQs

How does a ductless heat pump heat my home?

The outdoor unit absorbs heat energy from the outside air and moves it indoors through refrigerant lines. The refrigerant is compressed, which raises its temperature, and a fan in the indoor unit blows air across the warm coil into the room.

Does a mini-split also cool?

Yes. In summer the process reverses: the indoor unit absorbs heat from the room and sends it outside, and the fan blows air across a cold coil to cool the space.

How efficient are Mitsubishi Electric mini-splits?

Mitsubishi Electric mini-split and multi-split systems are up to 40% more efficient than conventional systems, and each indoor unit can be turned off when a room is not in use.

Which rooms are a good fit for ductless?

Sunrooms, home offices, bedrooms, garages, additions and finished basements are common choices, especially rooms the existing ductwork does not reach well. Whole-home systems are also available.

Can a mini-split work with my furnace?

Yes. A ductless heat pump can handle much of the heating and cooling while your furnace or boiler stays in place as backup for the coldest days, often called hybrid heat.

Are there rebates for mini-splits?

Often. Minnesota Power offers rebates on qualifying heat pumps, and Mitsubishi Electric runs seasonal promotions. We can tell you what is currently available.
